This Writer Becomes a Patient: My Experience with Dr. Rick Graebe
For nine years I worked closely with Dr. Rick Graebe, a behavioral optometrist in Versailles, Kentucky, writing a monthly eye health column. Over time I learned about macular degeneration, amblyopia, and the difference between eyesight and vision. Recently those roles reversed and I became the patient.
A Writer’s First Visit as a Patient
I arrived at Dr. Graebe’s clinic on a bright Thursday morning ready for a comprehensive eye exam and a new prescription. Stepping through the doors, I felt both curiosity and a bit of nervous excitement.
Arriving at the Office
It was a bright Thursday morning when I made the familiar drive along Versailles Road to Dr. Graebe’s office, located on Crossfield Drive off Route 60. Instead of arriving as a writer, I came needing a comprehensive eye exam and a new prescription.
A Warm Welcome
Walking into his welcoming clinic, I was greeted by Dr. Graebe, dressed casually with his signature warm smile. His easygoing manner immediately put me at ease as we began the exam.
Clear Explanations at Every Step
Throughout the process, Dr. Graebe explained each step in detail, making sure I understood what he was looking for and why it mattered. I appreciated the chance to stay informed about my health.
Inside the Comprehensive Eye Examination
The examination was thorough and holistic, covering everything from macular health to how well my eyes work together.
Macular Health and Eye Pressure
During the exam, Dr. Graebe checked my macula for any signs of degeneration and measured my eye pressure. Fortunately, everything came back clear and my eyes were in good shape.
Testing How My Eyes Work Together
He also tested how well my eyes worked together, and once again I received the thumbs up.
Discussing Night Driving and Reading Habits
After the exam I shared concerns about difficulty seeing at night when driving and my habit of using only one eye when reading in bed. Dr. Graebe reassured me that both are common as we age, explaining that our eyes let in less light over time and that depth perception is not essential for late night reading.
Our Holistic Approach to Care
Dr. Graebe’s concern extended beyond the eye chart and prescription.
Personalized Advice for Everyday Comfort
Knowing I spend most of my day at a computer and noticing my neck and shoulder pain, he recommended an osteopath he had visited for similar issues.
Leaving With Confidence
I left the office feeling well cared for not just in terms of eye health but as a whole person. My needs had been addressed in a comprehensive and friendly manner. It was truly a perfect medical experience.
