What Every Teacher Should Know About Visual Skills

Not just their eyesight, but their ability to point, track, focus, and coordinate their eyes while their brain processes everything at once. These are learned skills, and when they don't develop fully, the student doesn't look like a kid who "can't see." They look like a kid who won't sit still, hates reading, or just isn't trying hard enough.

That 75% finding comes from a Nobel Prize-winning Harvard research laboratory, not from optometrists. It means that for every four students in your class who are behind in reading, three of them may have an undetected vision problem that no school screening has ever caught.

    Six Signs You're Already Seeing

    You don't need special training to notice these. You've probably named half of them already.

    When a student can't sit still during desk work but has no trouble with active tasks, the problem may not be attention. It may be that near-vision work is physically exhausting their visual system.

    This isn't laziness. When the eyes can't sustain focus or stay coordinated at near distance, the brain burns through its resources fast. The child is genuinely fatigued, not unmotivated.

    If a student can explain a concept verbally but falls apart when they have to write it down or read it off a page, the gap between their intelligence and their output often has a visual root.

    When the visual system can't filter background information properly, the brain gets flooded with input from every direction. The constant movement and touching is often the child's way of trying to anchor themselves.

    This one is directly measurable. When the eyes can't make accurate jumps from the end of one line to the beginning of the next (saccades), or can't track smoothly across a line (pursuits), reading becomes a game of constantly re-finding your spot.

    Around 3rd to 4th grade, students shift from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." The visual demands spike dramatically. Children whose visual skills were barely keeping up suddenly can't, and the gap between their intelligence and their grades widens every year.

    What You Can Do Right Now

    When talking to parents, the key question is: "Has your child had a functional vision evaluation, not just an eye exam?" A standard eye exam checks whether they can see the chart. A functional evaluation checks whether their brain can use what their eyes are seeing.

    If a student is already working with NVPI, ask the parents to share the assessment report with you. It gives you specific information about what the child is working on, and Dr. Graebe's team actively wants teacher feedback on what's happening in the classroom.
