Once Skeptical About Vision Therapy, Dr. Graebe Now Sees the Light
Vision therapy can be confusing for many people, but its results can change lives. Dr. Rick Graebe, a trusted specialist in pediatric eye care and neuro-optometry, once had doubts about this approach. After seeing dramatic changes in his own patients, he became a strong supporter of vision therapy.
Journey from Doubt to Belief
Dr. Graebe did not always endorse vision therapy. His outlook changed as he followed the evidence in his practice.
Early Skepticism
During his studies at Indiana University, many classmates and teachers dismissed vision therapy as ineffective. The idea that exercises could change how the eyes and brain work together seemed unlikely to him.
Realizing Something Was Missing
After starting practice, he noticed that some patients with the correct glasses still struggled with reading, focus, and comfort. Their eyesight tested at 20/20, yet tasks that relied on visual processing remained hard.
The Eye and Brain Connection
In 1990 he attended a talk by Dr. Ken Gibson that explained how clear sight is only part of vision. Processing in the brain plays a key role. This insight pointed him toward a new way to help patients.
Vision Therapy in Action
Armed with fresh knowledge, Dr. Graebe decided to test vision therapy on real cases.
First Three Patients
He began with three children who were falling behind in school. After a course of therapy, each child showed striking gains. One student who had repeated a grade soon brought home straight A grades.
Continuing Success Stories
Encouraged, he expanded the program. Many children previously labeled with learning or behavior problems improved in class, at home, and in confidence. The pattern repeated again and again.
Who Can Benefit from Vision Therapy
Dr. Graebe now says vision therapy helps anyone whose visual processing limits daily performance.
Children Facing Classroom Challenges
Students who avoid reading, lose their place, or complain of headaches often discover that therapy improves endurance and comprehension.
Athletes Seeking an Edge
Sports rely on fast and accurate hand-eye coordination. Training the visual system can sharpen reaction time and spatial judgment.
Patients Recovering from Brain Injuries
After a concussion or other brain trauma, therapy can rebuild the link between sight and movement, easing double vision, dizziness, and balance problems.
Communities We Serve
Families visit Neuro-Visual Performance Institute from Versailles, Somerset, Lexington, Frankfort, Berea, Danville, and many surrounding towns to explore these benefits.
Take the Next Step Toward Clearer, More Comfortable Vision
Vision therapy gave Dr. Graebe a fresh outlook and it can do the same for you. We welcome your questions and look forward to supporting your eye health.
