Long Journey to a Career in Vision Therapy

Elizabeth Tincher’s inspiring story spans nearly three decades, beginning with a devastating car accident and leading to a rewarding career helping children through vision therapy. Her experience shows how resilience and innovative eye care can change lives for the better.

Early Life and Recovery

This section looks at the accident that altered Elizabeth’s life and the long rehabilitation that followed.

From Near-Fatal Accident to a Life-Changing Career

In 1994, as a 19-year-old student at the University of Kentucky, Elizabeth was left fighting for her life after a catastrophic car accident. She suffered a torn aorta and a severe brain injury, and doctors gave her only a 3 percent chance of survival. A team of 21 specialists placed her in a drug-induced coma for a month so her body could heal. When it was time to bring her out of the coma, physicians warned her parents that she might never fully recover mentally. Defying all odds, Elizabeth woke up and asked her preacher, “Why did this happen to me?” His answer, that good things would come from the ordeal, proved prophetic.

Challenges and New Beginnings

Elizabeth’s recovery was long and demanding. She endured six months of physical therapy and more than a year of speech therapy. Facial injuries required reconstructive surgery, including titanium implants for her cheekbone and eye socket. Despite these efforts, her right eye remained 70 percent impaired, which affected her depth perception. Determined to pursue nursing, she returned to college, but the detailed work of nursing, particularly tasks involving needles, proved too dangerous. While considering her next steps she experienced an unexpected blessing. Although told as a teenager that she would never have children, she became a mother of two and spent 12 years raising Kenzington and Collin. In 2008 she earned a degree in education and began a fulfilling career as an elementary school teacher.

Discovering Vision Therapy

This section explains how Elizabeth found vision therapy and what it has meant for her personally and professionally.

A New Path in Vision Therapy

In the summer of 2023 a conversation with her former college roommate, Jennifer Lord, now a Vision Therapist at Dr. Graebe’s Neuro-Visual Performance Institute, introduced Elizabeth to a new opportunity. By September she had joined the team as a Vision Therapist. Her personal experience with visual impairment gave her an authentic perspective on the effectiveness of Vision Therapy. Elizabeth shared, “After 24 years, I can finally read with my right eye. Vision Therapy has built new pathways from my eye to my brain. Everything I heard about Vision Therapy is happening for me.” Through her new role she also gained insight into why some of her former students struggled with reading despite the many strategies she used as a teacher.

Making a Difference in the Lives of Children in Central Kentucky

Elizabeth now helps children overcome vision-related challenges similar to her own. She sees Vision Therapy as a powerful tool that gives patients the skills they need for reading, learning, and everyday life. The Neuro-Visual Performance Institute provides personalized Vision Therapy programs that improve functional vision, enhance focus, and build essential visual skills for children throughout Central and Southern Kentucky.
