Every task you perform costs dimes. If a task is new or difficult, it is expensive. If a task is automatic, like walking across a room, it costs zero. The entire story of human development is the story of making expensive things free.

At birth, the only sensory system that is fully functioning is the vestibular system: the balance and motion sensors in the inner ear. Everything else (how to use arms, legs, hands, eyes) is essentially a blank slate. The pathways exist, but nothing is wired yet.

Many children develop their visual skills on what we call the "country road." Early in life, when demands are low, sitting in a circle, listening to a story, coloring, the country road works fine. Things are slow, things are simple, and the country road handles it.

But then life speeds up. Third or fourth grade hits, bringing the shift from learning to read to reading to learn.
