Children may narrow their eyes or partially close them while looking at books, worksheets, or screens. Some children squint only during homework while others do it throughout any near task. The child usually does not realize they are squinting until a parent points it out.
Squinting may appear during reading, writing, drawing, or screen time. Parents often notice it more when the child is tired or has been doing close work for a while. Teachers may observe the same behavior in the classroom during independent work time.

The first step is ruling out the need for glasses. A thorough exam checks for farsightedness, astigmatism, and other refractive errors. If glasses are prescribed but squinting continues during near work, further evaluation of the focusing system may be needed.
