As we age, many of us experience changes in our vision, but these changes can often be corrected with specialized therapies. Allan Tappen, a 58-year-old graphic artist from the Bluegrass region, knows this firsthand. For Tappen, his eyesight was not just a convenience but an essential tool for his work and livelihood.
The Impact of Deteriorating Vision
For over 30 years, Tappen had worked as a self-employed graphic artist. His eyesight was crucial not only for his creative work but also for building relationships with clients. When he began to notice a decline in his vision and a misalignment in his gaze, he grew concerned. “It was harder to drive at night, and I was self-conscious about making eye contact,” he shared.
This visual decline didn’t just affect his work; it also impacted his personal life. “Stargazing wasn’t as fulfilling as it used to be,” Tappen said. “Without depth perception, I lost my appreciation of the star-studded sky.”
Discovering Vision Therapy
After consulting several optometrists without success, Tappen’s sister recommended he visit Dr. Rick Graebe FCOVD at the Neuro-Visual Performance Institute in Versailles. During the first visit, Dr. Graebe diagnosed Tappen with a significant loss in depth perception and discovered that his eyes were misaligned, causing him to suppress vision in one eye.
Dr. Graebe immediately suggested Vision Therapy, a form of physical therapy for the eyes, brain, and body. Vision Therapy addresses various visual issues, including lazy eye, crossed eyes, double vision, and even some reading and learning disabilities.
Tappen’s therapy involved weekly sessions over the course of 30 weeks, each requiring an hour-long drive. Despite the challenge, Tappen remained optimistic and determined.
Vision Therapy for All Ages
Dr. Graebe emphasizes that vision therapy can be beneficial at any age. “Minor problems with the visual system when we’re young can become more difficult to deal with as we age,” he explained. In older patients, these issues can lead to balance problems, motion sickness, and dizziness.
For Tappen, the therapy brought remarkable improvements. His depth perception returned, and his confidence grew. “Since beginning therapy, I feel more assured in my business and personal interactions,” he said. His family also noticed the difference. His mother, in particular, was thrilled with his progress, telling him, “I think it’s working. I can see it in your eyes.”
