At Neuro-Visual Performance Institute, Dr. Rick Graebe FCOVD and his team are dedicated to providing comprehensive eye care for patients of all ages. Known for his expertise in Vision Therapy, Dr. Graebe has successfully helped children struggling with reading, learning, and behavioral issues. But did you know the practice also caters to adults and seniors? With additional optometrists specializing in geriatric care, the clinic provides cradle-to-grave eye health services.

The Importance of Eye Health at Every Age

While eye health is crucial for children’s development, it becomes even more important as we age. Older adults face a higher risk of eye conditions like macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma, all of which can severely impact quality of life if not detected early.

“It’s very important for people to get annual eye exams because many of these problems can be nearly 100% treatable if they’re caught soon enough,” Dr. Graebe says. Early detection and preventive care are essential to maintaining clear vision throughout life.

Common Eye Conditions in Seniors

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a common condition in adults over 70, affecting about 30% of people in this age group. It leads to the gradual loss of central vision, making everyday tasks like reading and watching TV difficult. Dr. Graebe’s office was the first in Kentucky to introduce the Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD) tester, a quick and painless way to detect early signs of macular degeneration. Early detection can significantly slow the progression of this condition.

Cataracts

Cataracts, the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, are another inevitable part of aging. By the age of 70, most people will experience some level of cataract development. Thankfully, cataracts are 100% treatable with a simple and painless surgery that not only removes the cataract but also often improves overall vision, sometimes eliminating the need for distance glasses altogether.

Glaucoma

Known as the “sneak thief of sight,” glaucoma can develop without any early symptoms. It is caused by excess fluid pressure in the eye, which, if untreated, can lead to blindness. While glaucoma affects less than 10% of the population, regular eye exams are crucial for early detection. Treatment is simple and effective, often involving just a prescription of eye drops to manage the condition.
