For the past nine years, I have had the pleasure of working closely with Dr. Rick Graebe, a renowned behavioral optometrist in Versailles, KY. Together, we’ve crafted a monthly column for our magazine, diving deep into the fascinating world of Vision Therapy and eye health. Throughout our collaboration, I’ve gained valuable insights into topics such as macular degeneration, amblyopia (lazy eye), and the important distinction between eyesight and vision. Dr. Graebe has always been the teacher, and I, the eager student. However, this dynamic shifted recently when I took on a new role: patient.

A Visit to Dr. Graebe’s Clinic in Versailles

It was a bright Thursday morning when I made the familiar drive along Versailles Road to Dr. Graebe’s office, located conveniently on Crossfield Drive off Route 60. This time, however, instead of arriving as a writer, I arrived needing a comprehensive eye exam and a new prescription.

Walking into his welcoming clinic, I was greeted by Dr. Graebe, who was dressed casually with his signature warm smile. His easygoing manner immediately put me at ease as we began the exam. Throughout the process, Dr. Graebe explained each step in detail, ensuring I understood what he was looking for and why it mattered. This was something I truly appreciated—not only as a curious individual but also as a patient wanting to stay informed about my health.

A Thorough and Holistic Examination

During the exam, Dr. Graebe checked my macula for any signs of degeneration, tested my eye pressure, and assessed my overall eye health. Fortunately, everything came back clear—no signs of macular degeneration, and my eyes were in good shape. He also tested my eyes to make sure they were working together smoothly, and once again, I received the thumbs-up.

After the exam, I shared some concerns with him, particularly about my difficulty seeing at night while driving and an odd habit of using only one eye when reading in bed. Dr. Graebe reassured me that both were quite common, especially as we age. He explained that night driving becomes more challenging because our eyes let in less light as we get older. As for the reading issue, he said that it’s no problem to use just one eye when reading late at night—after all, depth perception isn’t as crucial in this situation.

Beyond Eye Care: A Personal Touch

After addressing my concerns and writing me a new prescription, Dr. Graebe went above and beyond. Knowing that I spend most of my day working at a computer, he offered some unsolicited yet much-appreciated advice. Noticing I suffer from neck and shoulder pain, he recommended an osteopath he had personally visited for similar issues. This gesture showed me something that I had always known but now experienced firsthand: Dr. Graebe treats his patients as whole individuals, not just as “eye patients.” His approach is as holistic as it is professional.

A Trustworthy and Caring Specialist

I left Dr. Graebe’s office feeling well cared for, not just in terms of my eye health but as a whole person. It was evident that I was in capable hands with a doctor who genuinely cares about his patients. My needs had been addressed in a comprehensive and friendly manner, which is not something you can take for granted in healthcare. It was, quite simply, a perfect medical exam experience.

If you are looking for a pediatric eye doctor, neuro optometrist, or someone who genuinely cares about their patients in the greater Lexington area, Dr. Graebe is the doctor to see. His two convenient locations, in Versailles and Somerset, serve patients from all over Central and Southern Kentucky.
