Nothing would distress Dr. Rick Graebe FCOVD of Versailles, Kentucky, more than having to start a waiting list for his practice. Specializing in Vision Therapy, Dr. Graebe’s passion lies in helping patients improve their quality of life through targeted therapies for the eyes, brain, and body. Vision Therapy, a specialized form of physical therapy, is essential for many individuals experiencing a range of visual and neurological challenges. Dr. Graebe is committed to ensuring that his patients can access the care they need without delay, which is precisely why he’s expanding his practice.
Why the Expansion is Needed
Dr. Graebe has seen significant growth over the years. His practice has become a critical resource for residents in Central and Southern Kentucky, especially for patients from the greater Lexington area. “We’ve grown over the years, and we’re as busy as we can be,” Dr. Graebe says. “It would be sad and heartbreaking if we had to put people on a waiting list. That’s what this expansion is all about.”
In November, construction began on a new addition to Dr. Graebe’s office in Versailles. This 1,500-square-foot expansion will increase the practice’s total size to 5,800 square feet, enabling Dr. Graebe to double his therapy space and continue to serve patients effectively.
Enhanced Therapy Space and New Services
The additional space will accommodate a variety of specialized treatment rooms, each designed to meet the specific needs of Dr. Graebe’s patients. Dr. Graebe has even hired a new Vision Therapist, Elizabeth Tincher, to further enhance his team’s ability to offer individualized care.
A particularly exciting addition is the new “eye gym.” This state-of-the-art facility will look much like a physical therapy room, featuring specialized equipment such as balance beams, bouncy surfaces, and tools to measure eye-hand and eye-foot coordination. The eye gym will support therapy for sports vision and aid those with sensory integration issues by developing critical visual-motor skills.
“All of us have to learn to walk, to move our bodies through space, and that starts with the visual system,” Dr. Graebe explains. “We gather information with our eyes, process it with our brains, and then integrate it with our other senses. If any part of this process is flawed, it can lead to sensory integration issues.” By addressing these challenges, Dr. Graebe hopes to set his patients up for success not only in sports but in everyday life.
Another room in the new expansion will focus on neurocognitive therapies, such as those based on the Sensory Learning Program model developed by Mary Bolles. These therapies use brain re-training exercises to assist patients dealing with a wide variety of issues, from ADHD and developmental delays to autism and anxiety disorders. Additionally, Dr. Graebe plans to offer expanded treatments for patients suffering from concussions and other brain injuries, providing a comprehensive approach to visual and cognitive health.
The Impact on Patients Across Central and Southern Kentucky
Patients from nearby cities like Frankfort, Berea, and Danville are among those who regularly visit Dr. Graebe’s practice in Versailles, while the new Somerset location broadens access to care for patients in Southern Kentucky. Dr. Graebe’s commitment to his community is evident in his relentless drive to make his services available to more people in need.
When the expansion is complete, likely around April, Dr. Graebe plans to host a grand opening event to showcase the new facilities. This will be an opportunity for the local community, current and former patients, and healthcare professionals to see firsthand the new resources available. It’s a testament to Dr. Graebe’s dedication that he would invest in this growth to prevent any patient from being turned away.
